It was founded in 1915 in Geneva by Arnold Schweitzer. In 1929, Carl Schmid invented the Fixpencil, one of the first mechanical pencils. Following this, the invention of Prismalo watercolor pencils in 1931, Neocolor wax pastels in 1952, and the 849 ballpoint pens in 1969 are also closely linked to the name of Caran D'Ache.
